Build Your Makeup Business Before Quitting Your Day Job

Becoming a makeup artist can be exciting and very different from your regular 9-5 job. It can be alluring to give your two weeks notice once you have regular income for a few months but how do you know when your ready?

Plan of Action
1. Figure out how you will expand your business from part time to full time. Create a game plan for launching your makeup artist business. How will you market yourself? How will you manage money? Taxes? What are your goals in 3 months, 6 months, or a year?  What do you have to do to get there? Try to foresee anything that can go wrong, and create solutions.

2. Save up at least 6 months of your bills to create a cushion for any emergencies, low income months, or any business expenses you didn't foresee.

3. Get mentors, they can be wonderful resources when things go wrong or help guide you from their personal experience. They have the ability to share their stories, and help you avoid mistakes they made.

4. Create tangible actions quickly, don't waste any time. Every day matters, the faster you move the faster you'll start seeing results. Seeing results will also motivate you and keep you on track.

5. Develop self discipline working for yourself is not the same as working for someone else but you should treat it that way. Create hours that you will work, ways to be accountable, and structure that will make you efficient.

6. Research your market, find out who is hiring makeup artist and for what type of jobs. Are you in a film city? Do you have various beautiful venues for weddings? Do you live in a city that is not highly populated?

7. Research Makeup Artist in your area, find out what they charge their clients, when they are busy, when are they slow, if the market is saturated, where they work the most. This should give you a good idea of the pulse in your market, and should be a good factor in making your decision.

8. How will you run your business will you rent a space in a salon, will you have a makeup room in your home, will you travel to clients

9. Research your client demographics How old are your clients? Where do they shop? Do they value bargain deals or quality makeup application? Where do they work? What do they do for fun? What social media outlets do they use? What makeup brands do they use?

10. Create a Marketing Plan How will you advertise your services? Will you use social media? Will you hire out help? Will you manage it yourself?

11. Plan B What will you do if things don't work out? Did you leave doors open with your last employer? Do you have freelance work to supplement your income? Do you have a line of credit or loan available? What did you learn? What will you do differently next time?

12. Be Brave After you have figured out a game plan be brave and put yourself out there. Don't be afraid to ask for help, make sure to surround yourself with positive people and no matter what the outcome, learn from this experience.

Tips:
  • Create a schedule and stick to what works for you
  • When you are done with work be done, it's important to make time for yourself and not over work yourself to the point where your life is falling apart in other areas
  • Hire a house keeper if not weekly at least twice a month this will help you make more time to focus on your business.
  • Hire the help of teenagers in your life as assistants, pay them a few dollars to stuff envelopes, mail invoices, post a few times on social media, etc.
  • Celebrate milestones, goals, and accomplishments. Even if they are not huge goals every step in the right direction is progress.
